Gatherings are combination of connection + conversation + community. They are inspired by the the Jeffersonian Dinners of the early 1800s and the Gertrude Stein salons and The Bloomsbury Group of the 1900s.

In 2024, two acquaintances connected at a small local gathering in advance of their 25 year college reunion. They lamented the absence of the regular intellectual stimulation they got while on campus so many years ago. The idea to host supper club style dinners with a few friends and a guest speaker was floated but as often happens, life interrupted - a health scare, caretaking, the loss of a loved one, and other life transitions. Two years later, after numerous discussions with others seeking the same, Steue is brought to life to provide a community for those seeking connection that energizes and gatherings that stimulate.

Why Steue?

Antidote to the "Swift and Terrible Race"

Changing the tone and getting serious for a moment, while Steue’s salons are about fostering ‘intellectual conviviality’, the mission behind Steue is about addressing something a little bit more somber. There is a general malaise that many are feeling from a sense of social isolation, general monotony, or ‘stress from it all’. But it’s not actually a new phenomenon.

In his poem Around the Corner, Charles Hanson Towne  (1877-1949) speaks of the friend who lives just a block away, yet remains a stranger because "life is a swift and terrible race."

Decades later, this still resonates for many today. In the suburban landscape, people can find themselves in the 'outer orbitals'—physically distanced from the centers of high-energy connection. Meanwhile, in the heart of the city, the sheer velocity of transactional life and the noise of the crowd can stop us from ever breaking the surface of a meaningful conversation.

What’s changed since the time period of Towne’s poem is that there are a lot less spaces (“third places”) for us to counter the ‘swift and terrible race’. The good news is that much of this malaise feels less heavy when we are in the company of people who energize us. The challenge is that many of us is still find ourselves in social interactions that fall flat or that feel draining instead of those that ignite and energize us — where the sparks fly, where you leave the conversation and there’s an extra pep in your step. Steue aims to provide that pep, that spark. To help people find a tribe that ignites them.

So whether you live in the suburbs or the big city, we believe that meaningful connection shouldn't be left to chance. It is too easy to exist in parallel, separated by the friction of schedules - rarely intersecting in ways that challenge or nourish you. Steue aims to bring those parallel lines together—to draw people into a ‘nucleus’ of connection. By building a community for those who crave depth over small talk, who gather not to “network” but to connect, share ideas, and find their tribe, Steue acts as a 'homing device' for those who know that a true tribe is defined by meaningful connection, not just geography.

In the end, the aim is simple: to share ideas and stories that linger, and to do so with both good humor and good faith. We believe that generosity of mind matters as much as sharpness of wit, and that communities flourish when curiosity outpaces certainty.

Steue isn’t about status or sameness — it’s about shared values: openness, civility, and a love of ideas — along with the occasional confession of guilty-pleasure reading.

Equally important to note is what Steue is not. It is not aiming to be a lifestyle brand. Good design, a ‘good’ life, good food, good music, beautiful art, all such things are valued here but for their inherent ‘beauty’ not for show. Steue is for those who appreciate things not for the status they might provide but for what they represent in terms of their rigor, quality, craftsmanship, earned excellence, beautiful utility, or other aspect that suggests real value, not ‘marketing manufactured’ value. A Calendar of Company and Conversation

Our salon gatherings will offer a revolving door of ideas that stimulate: expect writers, artists, or the occasional philosopher to leave your brain nourished. The discussion group will run on enthusiasm rather than obligation; expect debate, detours, and laughter that derails any hope of staying on schedule.

Between salons, our table-centered gatherings will orbit around themes — literary, cultural, occasionally eccentric. We might dine like Woolf, toast like Baldwin, or read aloud from something entirely unpronounceable to the untrained tongue. Expect: seasonal menus, unpredictable conversations, and evenings that run long in the best possible way.

In addition to our core gatherings, Steue will offer experiences that center on learning, exploration, collective achievement, and giving back. Experiences are less passive comsumption more active contribution. Less ‘sip and paint’ and more plein-air painting. Less focusing on the vintage, more marveling about the story behind the vine.
